Don’t think about Thorin running to his side, collapsing next to him as Bilbo draws thick breaths

Don’t think about the small smile on his face as he sees Thorin there, and especially don’t think about the fact that Thorin is the only one Bilbo wishes to see in these last moments

Don’t think about the soft words of empty comfort that Thorin would give his hobbit (for in death, none could ever claim that Bilbo Baggins was not Thorin’s hobbit, especially with the king defending the title so)

Don’t think about gentle smiles and reassurances that no, Thorin, I could never hate you, no, Thorin, I could never fear you

Yes, Thorin, I could have loved you

Yes, I will love you still

And if you can’t help all that, make absolutely sure not to think about the soft, desperate sounds that Thorin would make when Bilbo drew his last breaths, or the stuttering cry that would ring across the battlefield as Thorin Oakenshield lost another piece of his family
